What is the microbiome?

The community of microbes that live inside and on your body is your microbiome. This includes bacteria, parasites, fungi, and viruses. Most of these microbes are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

What they lack in size, they make up for in number—there are more microbes living on or in your body than there are human cells!

The good news is that most of these microbes are not harmful and some even help us by doing things like making vitamins or protecting against harmful microbes.

Some of these microbes do play a role in causing disease.  When you have more of these harmful kind of microbes, we call this “dysbiosis.”
